The collection contains an album compiled by a sailor on the U.S. Navy Sub Chaser 102 with snapshots depicting life on board ship, officers and sailors at work, U.S. Navy battleships, seaplanes, a seaplane crash in Provincetown, Mass., the Norfolk Navy yard, convoy duty, storms, tourist sites, British ships and the sailor's life after the war in Provincetown,1920. Almost all the photographs have written captions. Among the ships photographed are Subchaser 219, HMS Henley, HMS Niobe, HMS submarines 13 and 14, French sailing ship Helene, USS Mississippi, USS Kearsage, USS New Mexico, USS Prairie, USS McKee, and German ocean liner Kronprinzesin Cecilie (USS Mt. Vernon). A photograph album compiled by an officer on U.S. Navy Sub Chaser 260 includes a radiogram announcing the armistice; an article on submarine hunters; postcards; an original cartoon of a soldier "I wanta go home" on Red Cross stationery; and snapshots of the Boston Navy Yard, the U.S.S. Chester, and crew members of the subchaser and the U.S.S. Maine. There are post war photographs of an unidentified relief mission in France, an unidentified 1921 [Harvard?] Mission to the American West including scenes of native Americans and wildlife; a voyage through the Panama Canal.

USS Maine (BB/2C), an armored battle ship, was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. A court of inquiry was unable to obtain evidence regarding the cause of the ship's destruction. In August 1910, Congress authorized the raising of the ship. The hull was refloated and towed into the Gulf of Mexico where it was sunk with honors on March 16, 1912.
